Start with the riding you want, then consider where you want to spend the evenings. Paintrock Lodge offers real beds, indoor plumbing and hot showers, with mileage and pace that vary by departure. Wapiti Ridge Wall-Tent Camp offers life under canvas and substantial mountain riding: at least 15 miles on each full riding day, with some loops approaching 20.
Both are basecamp trips. You unpack once and return to the same place each evening. The crew handles meals and horse care, and you spend your days exploring the Bighorn Mountains with guides.
Your preference for a bed or a cot tells us where you would like to sleep. We still need to talk about the riding.
Ability: Independent control of an unfamiliar horse or mule, balance on changing ground and attention to the guide's directions.
Conditioning: Departure plans range from 5–10 to 10–15 or 15-plus miles per riding day. Choose the actual week, not just the lodge.
Pace: Mostly walking or opportunities to trot and lope, depending on the departure. Not every mileage and pace combination is offered.
Terrain: Mountain trails with changing footing, climbs and descents. Shorter mileage still requires balance and control on changing ground.
Sleeping and bathrooms: Indoor lodging beside Upper Medicine Lodge Lake, with beds, indoor plumbing and hot showers. The lodge is off-grid.
Trip length: Most current departures have four nights and three riding days. The lodge finale has five nights and four riding days.
Ability: Experienced riders who can independently manage an unfamiliar horse or mule on rugged mountain trails.
Conditioning: At least 15 mountain miles on every full riding day. Some loops approach 20 miles. There is no dependable shorter-route alternative.
Pace: Mostly walking departures and forward departures are offered. Both involve substantial mileage. Faster gaits depend on the ground, stock and group.
Terrain: Steep grades, rocky trails and water crossings. Riders need balance and concentration through a full mountain day.
Sleeping and bathrooms: Wall tents with cots and pads, a shower tent and a nearby pit toilet. No electricity or indoor plumbing.
Trip length: Current standard departures have four nights and three consecutive riding days.

Paintrock has the broader range of planned daily mileage. Some lodge departures cover 15-plus miles. Others are planned for 10–15. The lodge finale is planned for 5–10 miles, approximately two to five hours horseback daily, at a mostly walking pace.
Those are different departures, not a menu of ride lengths everyone can choose from each morning. If you want shorter days, tell us before booking so we can discuss a week planned that way.
Wapiti Ridge requires a different commitment. Each rider must be conditioned for the full mountain days. A mostly walking camp departure still covers at least 15 miles on each full riding day, and you should not book expecting an early return or a shorter loop to be available.
Think about your longest comfortable recent ride and how you felt the following morning. Then consider doing it again. Years of experience and current saddle fitness both matter, but they answer different questions.

A walking pace gives you a different rhythm from a forward ride. It still asks you to stay balanced, steer, manage spacing and pay attention through climbs, descents and changing footing.
An experienced rider may prefer to walk all week. Another may enjoy opportunities to trot and lope. Tell us what you can comfortably do and what you would actually enjoy doing on vacation.
On forward departures, you need confidence at walk, trot and lope. Faster riding happens only where the footing, horses or mules, and group allow. Technical sections are ridden at a careful walk. Neither a faster departure nor a named destination guarantees a particular stretch of riding.
Our guide to choosing a relaxed horseback vacation explains how pace, hours and terrain fit together.
At Paintrock, you return to an off-grid lodge beside Upper Medicine Lodge Lake. Beds are made with linens, comforters and extra blankets, so you do not need a sleeping bag. Ask us about the room and bathroom arrangement for your party rather than assuming a particular setup.
If time at the lake or fishing is important to you, say so before booking. We can discuss how it fits the departure instead of trying to add it around a week planned for long rides.
Wapiti Ridge is a drive-in camp at the end of the road. You sleep in a wall tent, not a lodge bedroom. The guest tents have two cots each, and assignments depend on the party mix. Bring the sleeping gear on your trip's packing list.
At camp, you use a pit toilet, and the shower is a simple setup in a separate tent. Water is heated for a bucket used with a small rechargeable shower pump. You take turns washing up before dinner.
If those details will affect your comfort, they deserve just as much attention as the view. Our Wyoming FAQ has more accommodation and packing information.
Solo travelers can join open group departures. Friends can join an available departure together or ask about a fully open week for a private group. Availability and the riding plan need confirming before anyone commits to travel.
Have each rider describe their own recent riding, preferred pace and comfortable daily hours or mileage. A group of friends can love horses equally and want very different vacations.
If you want a bed, indoor bathroom facilities or a departure planned around fewer daily miles, start by asking about Paintrock Lodge. Check that the particular week's riding fits you.
If you want camp life and are currently ready for consecutive 15-plus-mile mountain days, Wapiti Ridge is worth discussing. Choose between mostly walking and forward departures according to both your skills and the pace you enjoy.
Tell us how often you ride now, your longest comfortable recent ride, your experience on unfamiliar mounts and your comfort with mountain terrain. Add your preferred pace, travel dates, party size and which accommodation appeals to you.
Ask Mark and Jessie about pricing and availability, and we will help you compare suitable departures.
